Information on the treatment of hypertension is constantly changing as research brings new data to the attention of clinicians and patients. The Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure continuously evaluates the causes and treatment of High Blood Pressure in the United States. Over a period of time this information is analysed and when appropriate guidelines are issued for the benefit of clinicians. The guidelines are not intended as a mandate to clinicians on how to treat, but rather, to provide them with the latest information which they can use to improve the treatment of their patients. The information and data provided by JNC7 is of vital importance to pharmacists as they improve their ability to provide counseling to their patients with hypertension. In between visits to their physicians, patients will on average visit their pharmacist two to three times to have prescriptions filled and refilled. Acquiring the latest information on the treatment of hypertension is thus a necessary part of pharmacy practice.
